Hymenectomy
The hymen creates a natural barrier that partially protects the woman's body from the entry of microorganisms. The hymen can have various shapes, and in most women before the first sexual intercourse, it contains only a small opening that serves for the outflow of menstrual blood from the body. During sexual intercourse, or sometimes even when inserting a tampon or during sports, the hymen may be disrupted, and the woman can continue her sexual life without restrictions. However, there may be cases where surgical intervention (hymenotomy) is necessary for the disruption or removal of the hymen.
The most common reason for hymen removal is discomfort in sexual life. A too rigid hymen, or conversely, a too flexible hymen, can cause pain during sexual intercourse. A minor surgical procedure can be a welcome relief for the woman. In rare cases, the hymen is very small and prevents the outflow of menstrual blood, making surgical intervention necessary.
