Tonsils are surgically removed (Tonsillectomy) in cases of chronic tonsillitis, abscess, or significant enlargement of the tonsils that impairs breathing or swallowing.
Basic Information
- The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in children
- In children, the procedure may be combined with the removal of the adenoid
- Immediately after surgery, there may be bleeding from the mouth, nose, or coughing up blood. If bleeding is detected, contact a doctor or medical staff immediately.
- Postoperative period may include varying degrees of pain, especially when swallowing, bad breath, changes in taste, or slight changes in voice. These changes are usually temporary and resolve over time.
- Healing and rest period lasts about 2 to 3 weeks
- For 10 days after surgery, only soft, mushy food should be consumed
- For 14 days after surgery, patients should avoid any physical activity, bathing in hot water, washing hair, and children should not attend kindergarten or school
- Children should not be vaccinated until at least 6 weeks after the procedure
