Pilonidal cyst

Do you have pain in the tailbone area, swelling or discharge from the skin in the area between the buttocks? This could be a pilonidal cyst, a common and painful problem affecting mainly young men. At CHIRKOZ Bratislava we provide comprehensive diagnosis and modern treatment of this unpleasant diagnosis – including laser surgery using the S.M.I.L.E. method.

What is a pilonidal cyst?

Pilonidal cyst is an inflammatory skin disorder located in the area between the buttocks (intergluteal fold). The cyst forms as a result of the accumulation of hair follicles, skin cells and debris under the skin. If the cyst becomes infected, a painful abscess forms with purulent discharge and unpleasant odor.

Most common symptoms:
  • Pain in the tailbone area, especially when sitting
  • Swelling, redness and skin inflammation
  • Discharge of pus, blood or both from an opening in the skin
  • Unpleasant odor from the affected area
  • Elevated temperature or fever (when infection spreads)

Treatment of pilonidal cyst at CHIRKOZ polyclinic

Conservative treatment:
  • Local compresses and skin care
  • Antibiotics (for mild inflammation)
  • Hygiene measures and hair removal
Modern surgical treatment – S.M.I.L.E. method:

In our polyclinic, we perform minimally invasive laser surgery, called S.M.I.L.E. (Subcutaneous Minimally Invasive Laser Excision). This method brings many benefits:

  • Small incision, almost no scar
  • Short healing time
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Low risk of complications
  • Quick return to work and normal life
After surgery: recommendations
  • 1–2 days of rest
  • Wound care according to instructions
  • Avoiding prolonged sitting
  • Regular check-ups to prevent recurrence
